Disaster was averted on Sunday when a man flying his single-engine plane on his way to Maui from Tracy, California experienced engine trouble.
At around 12:30 pm Lue Morton signaled the Hawaii National Coast Guard telling them his engine was malfunctioning and he was about to ditch the plane. Time reported that the Coast Guard instructed him to bail near a cruise ship en route to Lahaina at the time
The video shows Morton, an experienced pilot, releasing a parachute and nose-diving before splashing into the water. The plane was equipped with a life raft that Morton used to drift at sea until the Coast Guard arrived to pick him out of the water.
