A Sacramento man firing a gun to celebrate the New Year accidentally shot his girlfriend and is now under arrest, facing charges of involuntary manslaughter.
According to the local CBS News affiliate, the suspect, 24-year-old Stephen Lucas, “fired a gun during a midnight New Year’s Eve celebration”…and it “somehow hit his girlfriend,” who “died 20 years into the new year.”
Neighbors at the apartment complex where the incident occurred were in shock. One neighbor, Wayne Daniels, told CBS 13: “We’re absolutely heartbroken over it, and we believe it was a tragic accident. She’s just a young girl, 23 years old, and he’s 24.”
The boyfriend and girlfriend had a child together. Neighbors indicated the child was there when the father allegedly shot the mother.
