On New Year’s Day, California will implement new restrictions on firearms sales, limiting the types of weapons residents can purchase from a gun dealer.
Until 2015, CA allowed dealers to make changes to a semi-automatic handgun so that it would only fire a single shot. This allowed dealers stuck with semi-autos not on the roster of handguns approved for sale in CA to liquidate their inventory. Such alteration is illegal going forward.
According to Fox 5, the new restriction is the result of Assembly Bill 1964, sponsored by Assemblyman Roger Dickinson (D-Sacramento) and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed in July.
“The restriction is not on the purchaser or owner; it’s on the dealer,” said Steven Rubert, manager of San Diego’s Big Shot sporting goods. “There is nothing that says you can’t own a handgun not on the approved roster. It says a dealer can’t sell it.” He said dealers will be forced to “sell online or out of state to purchasers who live in a state where it would be legal for them to own it or law enforcement officers [of] which [they] have a lot here in San Diego.”
He said the new restriction essentially means gun dealers “have a shrinking number of guns [they] are allowed to sell in California.”
