Investigators are looking in to a fatal Christmas Eve series of events that led to the death of a dangerous and combative male U.S. citizen attempting to enter the United States from Mexico near San Diego, California.
The man first attempted to enter the U.S. through the southern border’s San Ysidro Port of Entry pedestrian crossing at approximately 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Records revealed the man “should be considered armed and dangerous,” according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) release.
CBP officers patted the man down and discovered that he had heroin on his person. They confirmed his criminal records and an outstanding arrest warrant for the man. Subsequently, he lunged over a desk, attacking two CBP officers.
Officers responding to restrain the man made multiple attempts to do so before one officer used “his service issued electronic control device, and gained physical control.”
Several minutes after being subdued, the assailant became unresponsive. A CBP Medical First Responder administered aid until Emergency Medical technicians arrived, continuing rescue attempts and transporting the man to a local hospital. A medical physician at the hospital pronounced the man dead.
Four officers involved in the incident were also transported to the hospital following the event. They were treated for minor injuries.
“The San Diego Police Department, CBP’s Office of Internal Affairs and the DHS Office of Inspector General are investigating,” the CBP release stated.
