NYPD Cop Killer Had No Connection to Compton

According to the L.A. Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles Police Department, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, 28, who ambushed and executed two NYPD officers on Saturday afternoon, had no known connections to the city of Compton. Brinsley posted a selfie on Instagram wearing a “Brooklyn” hat with a Compton city sign in the background.

The LA Weekly reports that the L.A. Sheriff’s Department, which patrols Compton, joined the LAPD in asserting that there was no evidence of any ties, arrests, or criminal record linking Brinsley to Compton. They assume he was simply visiting Compton when he took the photo. The captain of the Sheriff’s department’s Compton station told spokeswoman Nicole Nishida that there was nothing connecting Brinsley to Compton. The LAPD’s Jack Richter added that the LAPD would know if Brinsley had had any ties to Compton.

Brinsley may have been part of the Black Guerrilla Family, a black prison gang that had “declared open season on the NYPD,” according to the New York Daily News. The Black Guerrilla Family formed in 1966 in San Quentin state prison. A federal official told the Baltimore Sun that Brinsley had no known ties to the gang.
