L.A. Times: Vivek Murthy's Confirmation Means Guns Now 'a Healthcare Issue'

After Senate Democrats confirmed Obama’s Surgeon General nominee Vivek Murthy by a 51-43 vote on December 15, the Los Angeles Times reminded readers that Murthy believes “guns are a healthcare issue.”

The newspaper also reminded readers that Murthy supports a so-called “assault weapons ban.”

The Times quoted Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) condemning the “handful of conservative political activists” who opposed Murthy’s confirmation when he was first nominated, thereby leaving “the office of surgeon general empty in the midst of widespread fear over the Ebola virus’ spread to the US. “

Regarding Murthy’s views on guns and other issues, Murphy said, “No one should be surprised that the individuals nominated by President Obama to serve in his administration share many of his views.”

In October 2012 Murthy tweeted that he was “tired of politicians playing politics w/guns, putting lives at risk b/c they’re scared of NRA.”

Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) was the lone Republican to vote for Murthy’s confirmation.
