An undercover police officer who embedded himself with protesters marching in Oakland Wednesday night reportedly drew his gun on some demonstrators after he and his partner were attacked.
Wednesday marked the fifth straight night that demonstrators took to the streets of Berkeley to protest the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. According to NBC News, at just over 100 protesters, the turnout was smaller than the demonstrations held earlier in the week.
Also on Wednesday, protesters managed to shut down a forum hosted by tech guru Peter Thiel after storming Wheeler Hall at the University of California, Berkeley, chanting, “No police state–no NSA.”
According to the San Jose Mercury News, Wednesday’s protests began after several hundred Berkeley High School students left class and proceeded to march on the UC Berkeley campus, before staging a “die-in” around 4 p.m.
After many of the high school students left, the roughly 100 demonstrators remaining went to the on-campus home of UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks, before heading to Webster Hall to shut down Thiel’s speech.
After disrupting the Berkeley Forum, the protesters reportedly marched down Sproul Plaza, while local officials shut down both the Ashby and 12th Street Oakland City Center BART stations as the marchers approached.
