The latest protest against the Washington Redskins’ team name occurred Sunday in San Francisco, with roughly 300 protesters assembled near Levi’s Stadium, where the Redskins played the San Francisco 49ers.
The protesters gathered drums, bullhorns and protest signs, then made their way to the entrance to the Santa Clara Convention Center, one block away from the stadium. Dressed in Native American garb, accompanied by drums, they danced while they verbally targeted fans wearing Redskins gear.
Chanting “Change the name,” the protesters also held signs reading “No honor in racism” and “I’m not your mascot,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Both sides of the argument made their views plain; Redskins fan Richard Hale countered, “They should never change the name. If you start there, where is this going to end? You can’t be overly PC on everything,” the Chronicle notes.
Prior protests have included a massive rally on Nov. 2 in Minneapolis, with thousands of protesters and an ad aired during halftime of the NBA Finals produced by the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation of Yolo County. Other protests have occurred in Houston, Dallas, and Arizona.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office canceled the Washington Redskins’ trademark registration in June. Many media outlets are now refusing to use the Redskins’ name in their reporting.
