If ever there was a case for “every vote counts,” it’s that of Chula Vista, California’s city council race, an election that may now come down to a tie-breaking coin toss.
Former Chula Vista Councilman John McCann’s election day lead over former Chula Vista Mayor Steve Padilla has slowly dwindled to dead even. Currently, each candidate has garnered 18,450 votes for his election to the council position in a city of approximately 250,000 people.
Only an approximate 100 ballots are left to be counted across San Diego County of which possibly none are related to this dead even council race.
The county has until December 2 to certify its vote count. If at that time the vote still sits at even the candidates have five days to call for a recount. Should the count truly stand even between the Republican McCann and Democrat Padilla when all counting is complete, the election will be decided by lot. In this case that likely means the toss of a coin.
