Celebrity chef Guy Fieri abruptly closed down the Sacramento location of his Johnny Garlic’s chain of restaurants earlier this week, leaving one man who was hired just three days earlier out of a job.
The Sacramento Johnny Garlic’s was only open for about a year and a half, after having been converted from another of Fieri’s properties, fusion restaurant Tex Wasabi’s, according to CBS Sacramento.
Newly out of work, Britton Archie told CBS he wishes he had found employment somewhere else.
“I got a phone call that says today’s your last day,” Archie said, holding up his first and last paycheck, having worked just two full days at the restaurant. “No warning at all. Just walked in and worked a couple days and getting ready to work, and I get a phone call and they tell me no.”
Bruce Marano, COO of Johnny Garlic’s, told CBS that keeping open the Sacramento location no longer made financial sense for the company.
“Our real estate site selection has evolved into big box, theaters, things of that nature,” Marano said. “This lease coming to an end no longer fits the profile of what we’re looking for.”
This is not the first time the celebrity chef has had trouble with one of his restaurants; in 2012, “Guy’s American Kitchen and Bar” in Times Square was lambasted by New York Times food critic Pete Wells in a merciless, rhetorical question-filled review.
