The Associated Press has projected Peters the winner over DeMaio after new results were released Friday evening in California’s highly competitive, highly targeted 52nd Congressional race.
It’s been a razor thin margin between DeMaio and Peters up until Friday’s results. Less than 1,000 votes separating the candidates for two days, Wednesday results favored DeMaio and Thursday’s results favored Peters. Then came Friday night’s results leaving Peters with 4,491 votes more than DeMaio, a resulting 51.25% of the votes cast in the race.
Wednesday morning, when the results favored DeMaio, he announced plans to attend Congressional orientation saying, “I am very pleased with where we are this morning.” The DeMaio campaign has not provided comment on Friday’s results or whether DeMaio will call for a recount after results are certified.
The San Diego registrar has until December 2 to certify, after which a voter or campaign has five days to call for a recount says the registrar’s Michael Vu. Vu estimates approximately 10,000 votes are yet to be counted.
In the wake of Friday night’s vote count update, the Scott Peters campaign released the following statement:
“We are thrilled with today’s vote update, particularly given the tough Election Night Democrats had across the country,” said Campaign Manager MaryAnne Pintar. “This lead reflects the support Rep. Peters received from across the political spectrum and the tremendous Get Out the Vote effort by our field staff and hundreds of volunteers over the weekend and on Election Day.
“We are eager for every vote to be counted, appreciate the diligence of the County Registrar and remain grateful to all who’ve supported this campaign and volunteered to help during this extended count period.”
