U.S. Representative and Dr. Raul Ruiz maintained his seat on Tuesday night in California’s 36th congressional district. But before news of his victory, he announced that his wife is pregnant and that the couple is expecting their first child. Ruiz and his wife Monica were married earlier this year.
Tonight is a celebration. With all of you–my family, my friends, and all of my supporters, who have been so important to me in my journey–I want to share some other celebratory news: Monica and I are expecting our first child in April [of 2015].
The couple is expecting twins, according to the Desert Sun. Ruiz added that in 18 years from now, the world will have gained two additional voters, referring to his unborn children.
Ruiz, an emergency room doctor-turned politician, held a six-point lead against Republican Assemblyman Brian Nestande. The Democrat’s victory arrives in stark contrast with the national elections which yielded a Republican majority.
The announcement came from Ruiz’s election headquarters in Rancho Mirage.
