LOS ANGELES – Democrat state Sen. Ted Lieu defeated Republican challenger Elan Carr in the race to succeed Rep. Henry Waxman in California’s 33rd congressional district, according to the Associated Press.
Lieu was leading Carr by a 56.3-43.7% margin with 34.3% of precincts reporting late Tuesday night, according to the secretary of state website.
Carr mounted a strong campaign in a heavily Democratic district, including raising roughly $500,000 in the last two weeks of the election. However, Lieu benefitted from a strong Democratic voter registration advantage in the district, and ultimately rode that advantage to victory.
Carr, a Los Angeles deputy district attorney and criminal gang prosecutor, finished as the top vote-getter in California’s crowded June primary, while Lieu finished second.
Lieu will succeed outgoing Rep. Henry Waxman, the liberal stalwart who represented the district for four decades.
