Antonio Holmes, the 38-year-old car salesman allegedly shot Friday by suspect Luis Enrique Monroy-Bracamonte–who had been deported twice from the U.S.–has been upgraded to “fair” condition after being wounded in the head and enduring eight hours of surgery.
“Anthony Holmes is a strong guy, and he’s not gonna let a guy take his car,” friend Tyrone Murphy told the local CBS News affiliate.
Holmes was shot twice in an attempted carjacking when he refused to let Monroy-Bracamonte steal his car. Monroy-Bracamonte was in the midst of his sudden crime spree: he had just killed Sacramento sheriff’s Deputy Danny Oliver and would later kill Detective Michael Davis, Jr. and wound Deputy Jeff Davis.
Monroy-Bracamonte allegedly maintained multiple identities and had a tattoo of a Mexican national symbol on his belly.
