About six protestors displaying approximately three signs came out to protest a San Diego oceanfront brunch fundraiser for 52nd congressional district “New Generation Republican” candidate Carl DeMaio that featured U.S. House Speaker John Boehner Saturday morning.
DeMaio is challenging U.S. Representative Scott Peters for his seat in the November general election. Ads littering the San Diego airwaves have been flying between the two camps and hammering both candidates. It is one of the most highly targeted races in the country.
But this past week an October surprise entered the mix. Former DeMaio campaign staffer Todd Bosnich’s accusations of sexual harassment against the candidate have surged into national headlines. DeMaio denies the claims, calling them “completely false.”
Multiple allegations have surfaced between the two. Bosnich details the harassment and an offer of pay for silence. Demaio claims that Bosnich plagiarized and broke into the campaign offices after being let go.
In response to the allegations against DeMaio, the National Republican Congressional Committee affirmed that they stand behind their candidate, calling the sexual harassment claims unsubstantiated, Breitbart News recently reported.
Saturday, Boehner spoke at the fundraiser for DeMaio where the guest list included local GOP heavyweights, the San Diego County Republican Party Chairman and major donors. The suggested contribution to attend was $1,000.
Calls were put out for a demonstration against DeMaio regarding the recent sexual harassment allegations outside the Boehner Saturday morning fundraiser in San Diego. However, Democrats’ enthusiasm was low, with only about six demonstrators and approximately three signs between them. Two of those signs read, “Dirty DeMaio” and “I Stand with Todd.”
Just one week ago, a poll of 400 likely November voters in California’s 52nd Congressional District was conducted, revealing greater enthusiasm for Republican candidates in general. 40.2% conveyed greater enthusiasm about voting for Republican candidates than in the 2012 general election while only 24% are more enthusiastic about voting for Democrat candidates.
Among those surveyed, 17% identified as very conservative, 30% somewhat conservative, 36% somewhat liberal, 9% very liberal and 8% in between or unsure. Competitive Edge conducted the poll, which was paid for by the Republican Party of San Diego County.
