SAN DIEGO, California — Extreme temperatures have led San Diego County area schools to implement “minimum day” schedules for schools with less than 100% classroom air conditioning.The high heat comes as the county is in the midst of a 20% mandatory conservation Drought Alert, and huge swaths of California are listed in the highest level, exceptional drought.
San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) has issued a statement that 120 schools are on minimum day schedules for Monday. The schools on altered schedules have been placed on early release due to a lack of full air conditioning in at least some classrooms. All San Diego schools have reportedly canceled after-school athletic activities.
A National Weather Service (NWS) Heat advisory of “dangerous conditions” and NWS guidelines led SDUSD to implement the early release schedule. They may also implement the same schedule for Tuesday, depending on determinations to be made Monday.
Sweetwater Union High School District has also implemented a minimum schedule at six local schools. All Coronado School District schools operated on a minimum day schedule of 12:30pm release. National School District has also implemented early release for both Monday and Tuesday due to the high heat.
High temperatures that ramped up over the weekend are expected to persist through Tuesday.
The County has also posted a list of over 100 “cool zone” sites where area residents can go to get respite from the heat.
