The Castro Valley Unified School District, apparently a sleepy school district, decided that they needed to purchase something to wake them up: a $14,000 espresso maker.
Local CBS News affiliate KPIX in San Francisco reported that local citizens were furious when they discovered the news; they inundated the school board’s Facebook page with irate comments. One read, “There is no good explanation for a $14,000 espresso machine bought with district money–period!!!!!”
At a school board meeting last Thursday night, school board officials reportedly gave an unusual defense for their actions: the espresso machine woul save money for the district because they could use it to cater their own events.
Castro Valley Assistant Superintendent Candi Clark asserted, according to KPIX, that the espresso machine would save a job at the school board, arguing, “We have a 14.5 hour position in the child nutrition department that we are working really hard to keep. This is an opportunity to keep that position.”
Somehow, the school board convinced itself that the purchase was necessary; it voted unanimously to keep it.
