On Monday, legislation creating “Gun Violence Restraining Orders” for California will be heard by the Senate Appropriations Committee.
The measure–AB 1014–is sponsored by Assembly members Nancy Skinner (D-15) and Das Williams (D-37).
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the measure will “allow family members, licensed therapists and health care providers to petition a judge to take firearms from someone who has shown signs that they could harm others or themselves.”
Current California law only allows “legally purchased guns” to be confiscated from persons “convicted of a felony or a violent misdemeanor; people subject to a domestic violence restraining order; or those who are determined to be mentally unstable.” Breitbart News previously reported that AB 1014 could broaden these categories to include bans on gun ownership for persons convicted of driving under the influence (DUI).
When issued, a “Gun Violence Restraining Order” would be valid for one year.
