'Banana Split': Truck Carrying 60,000 Pounds of Bananas Tips Over on CA Highway

A dump truck carrying 60,000 pounds of bananas en route from Mexico to California tipped over in Alameda County Monday, resulting in some squashed fruit, a bit of oil being spilled from truck, and a few banana jokes on NBC Bay Area’s Facebook page where the story was posted.

The big-rig truck reportedly tipped over while unsuccessfully attempting to avoid hitting an unoccupied, disabled Ford 150 which was left on the side of the road, according to NBC. The car’s driver had luckily left the vehicle before the truck smashed into it. The accident resulted in the closing of a portion of the westbound Interstate Highway 580 at Greenville Road, notes NBC.

No serious injuries were reported in the slip up. The jokes, however, went flying all over NBC Bay Area’s Facebook page. Comments from users of the social media site such as “They were monkeying around” and “Banana split” were posted to the page.

NBC noted that one user even wrote “There’s nothing appealing about this accident.” Or perhaps he meant there’s nothing aPEELing about it.
