The Los Angeles Times reports that the National Weather Service announced on Thursday that California’s drought is getting worse and worse. In June, almost four-fifths of the state was labeled as suffering “extreme” drought conditions–and in those areas, the most severe conditions, called “exceptional,” climbed to 36%, up from 33% in May.
The drought has now parched not only parts of Northern California, all of Central California and various coastal communities, but also Ventura and Los Angeles counties, as well as a great deal of Orange County. April was the first time in 15 years that the whole state of California was determined to be suffering from severe drought.
As a result of the drought, harsh water measures are being implemented throughout the state. The State Water Project has already cut the amount of water it allots to various parts of the state, which affects millions of people, as it supplies the majority of the state with water.
The Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades both voluntarily drained their fountains and pools; and because the Central Valley has been crippled by the drought, fruit and vegetable prices are expected to increase by 6%, the Times reports.
