A Stockton, CA charity booth selling Fourth of July fireworks to benefit the blind was targeted by fraudsters who passed it hundreds of dollars in counterfeit bills on Sunday. They handed the workers fake $100 and $50 bills and pocketed the real change they received, depriving The Community Center For The Blind of money that was intended for eye treatments as part of an annual fundraiser. Volunteers only noticed the scam at day’s end.
Local Fox affiliate KTXL posted a photograph of the counterfeit money on its Facebook page. The fake bills were used at seven charity booths in all.
One of the alleged perpetrators returned the next day, but reportedly fled when volunteers called police. The total losses to the charity amount to $500 in cash and $200 in fireworks, according to a report by KTXL’s Zohreen Adamjee. Volunteers have decided to decline further large bills.
