NRCC Demands Dems Return Cash From Indicted Obama 'Mega-Donor'

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) is calling on two California Democrats to return campaign donations made by Kareem Ahmed, a “mega-donor” who gave over $1 million to Obama and Democratic Party candidates and super PACs, and who was indicted on insurance fraud and involuntary manslaughter charges Friday.

According to liberal website Talking Points Memo, Ahmed, as president and CEO of Landmark Medical Management, allegedly masterminded an insurance kickback scheme with 15 of his associates. In addition, the indictment for the involuntary manslaughter charge alleges that Ahmed and two associates “did unlawfully and without malice kill Andrew G. (a minor), a human being, in the commission of a lawful act which might produce death, in an unlawful manner and without due cautions and circumspection.”

In addition to his $1 million campaign contribution to President Obama’s 2012 re-election effort, Ahmed made maximum campaign donations to several House Democrats. Rep. Julia Brownley (above) of the 26th district received $2,600, the maximum allowable contribution, from Ahmed in 2013, and Pete Aguilar, the current mayor of Redlands, California and 31st District congressional candidate received $7,700–$2,500 in 2012 and $5,200 in 2013.

Now, the NRCC is calling on the pair to return the donations.

“An indicted Democrat mega donor is funneling his dirty campaign cash to Julia Brownley and Pete Aguilar,” NRCC digital press secretary Andrew Clark told Breitbart News. “If these Democrats want to prove that this type of politics has no place in Southern California, then they should lead by example and return the donations immediately.”

Brownley won her 26th District primary in June by just 800 votes. She will face stiff competition from Republican Jeff Gorell in November’s general election.

Meanwhile, Aguilar finished second to Republican Paul Chabot in the 31st District primary. Republican Lesli Gooch, who finished in third place just 209 votes short of Aguilar, has called for a recount in that contest.

A 2012 Talking Point Memo report revealed how Ahmed seemingly came from nowhere to become a high-profile donor to both the Obama campaign and smaller, local Democratic campaigns.

“Ahmed’s big checks started coming in February. The first, on February 6, was for $35,800 and made out to the Obama Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee supporting both the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee. Only a few weeks later, two $250,000 donations went to Priorities USA Action, the most prominent Democratic super PAC. In March, Ahmed sent Priorities another $500,000. In April, the Obama Victory Fund got another $40,000. In May, his wife gave the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee $30,800. In June, Ahmed gave $50,000 to House Majority PAC, a super PAC supporting Democratic efforts to retake the House of Representatives. Thousands of dollars from Ahmed and his wife have ended up in the campaign coffers of Democratic state parties and candidates across the country, including Sen. Bill Nelson in Florida, Senate candidate Tim Kaine in Virginia, and Rep. Brad Sherman in California.”

The Brownley and Aguilar campaigns did not respond to requests for comment.
