A parking sign posted for at least three years in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles that cautioned drivers they could park for one minute only was finally replaced on Friday after Drudge Report highlighted it on its website.
According to NBC Los Angeles, Los Angeles Times staff writer Laura Davis tweeted a picture of the sign, along with a caption, that went viral:
The sign had apparently been up since 2011 or earlier. Any Google Maps user could find it by doing a search of the address 11777 San Vicente Boulevard in Brentwood, according to NBC.
The L.A. Weekly reported that the Los Angeles Parking Violations Bureau issues 2.5 million parking tickets a year in Los Angeles, at a cost of $160 million to city drivers. Mayor Eric Garcetti has established a “Working Group on Parking Reform,” which will hear a proposal from two Los Angeles residents that would cap parking tickets at $23 for violations that “do not threaten public safety.” Twenty-three dollars is the median hourly wage of Los Angeles workers.
The “1 minute parking” sign also generated a lot of discussion on Reddit, where users were able to persuade the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) to finally replace the sign:
