Sen Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, offered sharp criticism of the Obama administration Tuesday, saying that it was “very disappointing” that the White House had not consulted with Congress 30 days prior to trading five Taliban leaders for alleged deserter Bowe Bergdahl, as required by law.
“[T]he White House is pretty unilateral about what they want to do when they want to do it,” she said, adding that her whole committee was “very dismayed” about the administration’s actions.
Feinstein was speaking to reporters in the Capitol, and revealed that the White House offered her a personal apology for the “oversight” of not having notified her in advance. The apology came from Deputy National Security Advisor Tony Blinken, the National Journal reports.
Though Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has defended the deal, a growing number of Democrats are expressing serious doubts or open opposition.
