Democrat primary candidate Ro Khanna, taking on Nancy Pelosi-endorsed incumbent Rep. Mike Honda with the help of powerful Silicon Valley executives like Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, has a penchant for hyperbole.
Shortly after declaring the 17th congressional district the “world’s most important district” since several major tech companies are headquartered there, Khanna made a boast about his abilities that might rankle some of the Democratic lawmakers he hopes to join as a colleague.
“I would argue that I have greater expertise on the economic issues than anyone currently in Congress. And, frankly, we need more people with real world experience going to Congress instead of the career politicians. Most people in Congress, many of them, their single expertise is how to get elected!” Khanna said at a recent candidate forum, according to audio from a local radio segment.
The bitter Democrat-on-Democrat race is giving the GOP “civil war” a run for its money. Khanna just filed an ethics complaint against Honda, who’s well-respected by national Democrats for his work on human rights.
Former Speaker Pelosi backed Honda, but several key members of President Obama’s political team are working for Khanna, who worked in the Obama administration in the commerce department. Despite members of his team working for Khanna, Obama actually endorsed Honda, as did both of California’s Democratic senators, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein.
