On May 30 Breitbart News reported that Representative Mike Thompson (D-CA) and about two dozen Democrats are pushing a bill ostensibly aimed at banning stalkers, domestic abusers, and the mentally defunct from buying guns.
The problem with these bans is that they already exist via ATF Form 4473–a federal form gun purchasers submit to when going through a NCIS background check.
Here are three questions from that form:
Question 11f, form 4473: “Have you ever been adjudicated mentally defective (which includes a determination by a court, board, commission, or other lawful authority that you are a danger to yourself or to others or are incompetent to manage your own affairs) OR have you ever been committed to a mental institution?”
Question 11h, form 4473: “Are you subject to a court order restraining you from harassing, stalking, or threatening your child or intimate partner or child of such partner?”
Question 11i, form 4473: “Have you ever been convicted in any court of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence?”
If your answer is “yes” to any of these questions, then an individual is already barred from buying a gun.
So if the stalkers, domestic abusers, and the mentally defunct are already barred from buying a gun, why are Democrats pushing legislation to bar them from buying a gun?
