Several candidates in the race to replace retiring Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) in California’s 33rd congressional district are currently polling voters, but none are willing to release their results–at least not on the record.
Sources in several campaigns said that Wendy Greuel (D), the former Los Angeles Controller, polled voters in the West Los Angeles district last week.
One source said that Greuel’s poll is thought to show a near-tie among five leading candidates: Greuel, State Sen. Ted Lieu (D), public radio host Matt Miller (D), prosecutor Elan Carr (R) and author Marianne Williamson (I). The Greuel campaign did not return several requests for comment.
The Carr campaign confirmed that it also polled over Memorial Day weekend, but would not share its results. Other campaigns declined to comment on the record.
Daily Kos contributor Joseph Mailander, who has followed the race closely, wrote recently: “The top reason you are not seeing polling data in this race is that pollsters don’t want to look foolish.”
Indeed, with 18 candidates, there is likely to be a high degree of variability–as well as a potentially large number of undecided voters.
Lieu and Greuel lead in Democratic Party endorsements; Williamson leads the money race; Miller won the Los Angeles Times endorsement; and Carr is the most prominent Republican.
