Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Josh Beckett threw the first no-hitter of his career and in Major League Baseball this year on Sunday afternoon at Philadelphia in a 6-0 win over the Phillies.
Beckett struck out Chase Utley looking on his career-high 128th pitch to cap off his no-hitter in what has been a redemptive comeback season to date.
Beckett’s no-hitter was his first in 321 career starts and the franchise’s first since Hideo Nomo’s improbable no-hitter at Coors Field in Colorado in 1996. It was the storied franchise’s 21st no-hitter and the 11th in Los Angeles Dodgers history.
He now joins Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers like Sandy Koufax, Carl Erskine, Ramon Martinez, Nomo and Fernando Valenzuela as Dodgers who have thrown a no-hitter.
Beckett, a once-dominant ace with the Red Sox and Marlins, has had to transform his pitching style to mix in more off-speed pitches after undergoing surgery last season for nerve problems in his neck. He has a 2.43 ERA so far this season.
