Former California Fire Chief Orville “Moe” Fleming, who was on the lam for 16 days for allegedly stabbing to death his live-in girlfriend, was captured on Friday. Fleming had spent much of that time hiding under a bush not far from where Sara Douglas was found dead.
According to the Sacramento Bee, on April 30 Douglas was brutally stabbed to death inside her blood-spattered home with a bed sheet tied around her neck. Authorities claim that Douglas met Fleming when she was a paid escort. Moreover, Fleming’s wife told authorities that Douglas threatened that she would release sex tapes of her husband and other fire fighters if she did not pay her the money that her husband owed her.
The Bee reported that investigators searched from Mexico to Canada for Fleming “using technology, using helicopters, using canines, using officers.” But, according to Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones, it was “good old-fashioned police work” that unearthed Fleming when one detective decided to circle back to the scene of the crime and spotted Fleming getting on a bus in the south part of Sacramento County.
The sheriff described Fleming’s run from the law as a kind of “fleeing equivalent of curling up in the fetal position.” Jones explained in a Friday night press conference that the alleged murderer “admitted culpability in the stabbing of Ms. Douglas and gave a full statement in that regard.”
