X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer missed the world premiere of his new film in New York on Saturday night in the wake of two recent sexual abuse lawsuits filed against him, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
During the film’s introduction before the screening, 20th Century Fox CEO Jim Gianopulos thanked Singer, but the red carpet attendees at the Javits Convention Center in Manhattan reportedly did their best to dodge questions about the director, although several of the film’s stars spoke about Singer’s work.
“You just knew he was going to pull it off because he has such a vision and is so meticulous and so assured,” actress Ellen Page told the Reporter. “You watch him work, and it’s a little bit mind-boggling how he manages to handle it all.”
In a quote to Variety, Patrick Stewart, who plays Professor Charles Xavier in the film, praised Singer’s directing style: “Well, he is a visionary. He is a serious filmmaker. He knows the craft inside out. He knows what he wants, although sometimes it could be a roundabout process to get there.” Stewart added that he keeps in constant touch with the director, and when asked how he’s doing, responded: “He’s great!”
In the same report, Simon Kinberg, the film’s screenwriter, said it wasn’t immediately clear whether Singer would return to film X-Men: Apocalypse, due out in 2016. “You’d have to ask Bryan.”
Singer and several associates face sexual assault allegationss brought by Michael Egan and John Doe No. 117 in two separate lawsuits filed in Los Angeles earlier this month.
