Retiring congressman George Miller, a Bay Area Democrat and lieutenant to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, told a local NBC News reporter May 9 that his roommate, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), “has not made his bed in 30 years.”
Miller was responding to a question by reporter Raj Mathai, who asked Miller which of his congressional roommates–whose Washington, D.C. living arrangement inspired the Amazon.com TV series Alpha House–had been “the messiest.”
“Uh… Chuck Schumer’s a tough one, you know. Leon Panetta–he had hospital corners on his bed, you could bounce a quarter off his bed. I think we believe that Chuck has not made his bed in 30 years.
“Fortunately, we have a person that comes in and helps clean the house every so often. But in between, it’s a rough go.”
The question and answer come at 1:06 in the interview.
Miller also blamed the lack of progress in Congress on “the advent of the Tea Party, and money. It [the Tea Party] now threatens members if they do work cooperatively with the Democrats.”
