Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria is breaking into politics. On Monday, the actress launched the Latino Victory Project, a new political action committee aimed at electing more Latino candidates to state office.
According to Southern California Public Radio’s KPCC, Longoria teamed up with Democratic fundraiser Henry Munóz to launch the PAC, which describes itself as non-partisan, even though some of the first candidates to receive contributions will be Democrats.
The PAC will first contribute to 36th District Democrat Rep. Raul Ruiz in his battle with Republican challenger Brian Nestande and will also pump cash into Democrat Amanda Renteria’s campaign in her battle against Republican Rep. David Valadao in the 21st District, according to the report.
In a statement to KPCC, PAC President Cristóbal Alex explained the group’s vision: “California is the future of the country. The rest of the country is eventually going to look like California, and leadership is coming from California.”
Alex also explained the contributions to the two Democratic Congressional candidates specifically, saying Ruiz is “a doctor who’s always given back to his community,” while “Amanda was the very first Latina to serve in the U.S. Senate as chief of staff.”
Reportedly, the PAC has already raised $5 million from donors and will also contribute to Nevada Assemblywoman Lucy Flores and Texas state Sen. Liticia Van De Putte, both running for lieutenant governor in their respective states.
