As early voting starts in the race to replace retiring Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), singer Alanis Morissette has cut a campaign song for independent candidate Marianne Williamson.
The tune Today brims with the word “revolution” as well as the brand of anti-corporate rhetoric recently heard from the Occupy Wall Street movement.
Part of the candidate’s promise is to lessen the hold money has over the political process, which makes her status as the race’s leading fundraiser ironic even before Morissette entered the equation.
Williamson told The Hill how the singer became a part of her unlikely political run for the CA-33 Congressional seat:
“Several weeks ago, at our Love, Enlightenment and Politics seminar, a woman in the audience asked Alanis Morissette if she would write a song for the campaign. I remember feeling a bit embarrassed, hoping Alanis wouldn’t think I’d put her up to it! But Alanis being Alanis, she simply said, ‘Sure!’ Now, true to her word, Alanis Morissette has produced a masterpiece,” she writes on her website.
“I have never heard a song more powerfully describe this moment in our history, or more lovingly call forth our generation’s genius from the ashes of our pain. With her inimitable musical alchemy, Alanis has provided an anthem for our audacious quest to get America back on track.”
Williamson released this statement to Breitbart News regarding the singer’s involvement in her campaign. “I am honored Alanis wrote the song and thrilled by how many people in the district are responding to the call to end corporate rule.”
The 33rd District primary election will be on June 3. Williamson will battle ten Democrats, three Republicans, two fellow Independents, a Libertarian, and a Green Party candidate in hotly contested race.
