Bill Bloomfield, the Manhattan Beach Republican who became an independent and then challenged 33rd congressional district Rep. Henry Waxman (D) in the 2012 election, is investing almost $200,000 of his own money in the campaign of Democrat Ben Allen in the liberal 26th State Senate District. Bloomfield (left, above) spent almost $8 million of his own money when he challenged Waxman.
The California Secretary of State’s Office shows Bloomfield spent $198,744.17 for Allen through April 30, most of it for literature and mailers, but some of the rest for campaign consultants and polling.
Bloomfield has supported a slew of GOP candidates in the past. Yet he has also donated lesser sums to Democrats, South Bay Rep. Jane Harman among them.
The state’s records reveal that the only other candidate in the 26th district to obtain outside donations is fellow Democrat Vito Imbasciani, a physician, who obtained roughly $65,000 from two medical groups.
Other candidates running against Allen are Democrats Sandra Fluke, Betsy Butler and Amy Howorth.
