The folks behind Mad Men learned a lesson or two from fellow cable hits Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and The Walking Dead.
The latter shows would often split seasons into two halves or make fans wait many months before new episodes arrived.
AMC is doing a little of both for Mad Men, which starts its seventh and final season at 10 p.m. EST tonight. Call it one very long goodbye.
The acclaimed drama returns for the first half of its two-part final season, which has enigmatic ad executive Don Draper (Jon Hamm) spending a lot of time in sunny California. The show will air seven episodes this year and seven more next year.
Show creator Matthew Weiner told The Hollywood Reporter that he understands the pressure on wrapping up a beloved show in fine form.
What has really been the pressure this year, no matter what happens, is that these people are going to end this season frozen in time. That’s the last time we see them,” he told THR. “There’s a pressure to make sure that everyone we deem important in the show, which is a huge ensemble, that they’re treated with responsibility.
Hamm isn’t letting only his AMC work speak for him. He’ll star in the baseball drama Million Dollar Arm starting May 16. The film casts Hamm as a sports agent who thinks he’s found a superstar pitcher in India thanks to a reality show competition named Million Dollar Arm.
