Democrat Bobby Shriver–nephew of John F. Kennedy, brother to Maria Shriver, and (for now) still brother-in-law to Arnold Schwarzenegger–has canceled an “exclusive” campaign evening at a Rolls-Royce dealership in Beverly Hills, blaming a lower-level staffer for scheduling the event, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“It was just a bad mistake by the staff,” his campaign consultant is quoted by the Times as saying.
Shriver, the former mayor of Santa Monica, is running for Los Angeles County supervisor from the wealthy Third District against three opponents, all of whom are Democrats. Though the area is one of the wealthiest in the city and the country, the party’s Occupy Wall Street-style “99% versus 1%” rhetoric could makes association with the Rolls-Royce brand a problem for Shriver, who is already widely seen as a son of political privilege.
The lively race for the county supervisor seat was triggered by the imminent retirement of local political legend Zev Yaroslavsky.
According to the Times, the Rolls-Royce evening on April 22 was to have included “specialty cocktails and scotch tasting,” and was advertised using an image of the new Rolls-Royce Wraith, described by the Wall Street Journal‘s Dan Niel as a symbol of “class privilege,” as well as “sporty,” “rakish,” and “roguish.”
