A 6-week-old baby in Connecticut has died, apparently due to the Chinese coronavirus, Gov. Ned Lamont (D) announced on Wednesday.

The newborn baby from the Hartford area was unresponsive upon arriving at the hospital and tested positive for the deadly disease after passing away. The baby is believed to one of the youngest victims of the illness in the United States.

“This is a virus that attacks our most fragile without mercy,” Lamont said in a statement announcing the fatality. “This also stresses the importance of staying home and limiting exposure to other people. Your life and the lives of others could literally depend on it. Our prayers are with the family at this difficult time.”

As of Wednesday, 3,500 cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in Connecticut and 85 people have died.

“The trend continues pretty much along the lines of what we have been planning for,” stated Lamont.

On March 20, Lamont signed an executive order as part of a new effort labeled “Stay Safe, Stay at Home” which requires non-essential businesses to shut down.

“Those retail stores that are non-essential, do not open,” the governor said. “This is tough medicine. I think it’s right the medicine.”

Across the United States, there are 206,207 coronavirus cases and4,542, according to Johns Hopkins University.
