A 36-year-old Lebanese migrant who was shot dead late last month by German police after yelling “Allahu Akbar” and attacking several people with a knife has been revealed as a convicted sex offender.
Lebanese migrant Omar K. was killed by police after attacking several people in Hamburg with a knife on May 28th while yelling “Allahu Akbar”. He was shot a total of seven times after also attacking police officers.
New information has come to light regarding the criminal background of Omar K. as police continue to investigate a possible motive behind his mass stabbing attack, with a new report claiming that he had sexually abused a 23-year-old woman in November of 2019, Die Welt reports.
According to the newspaper, the Lebanese migrant, who is also HIV positive, had attempted to sexually assault the young woman, a Russian au pair, but the 23-year-old fought back and bit part of Omar K’s finger off.
He was later arrested on November 5th of that year following a tip by the University Medical Centre (UKE) hospital in Hamburg which treated him for his injury. He was later convicted of aggravated sexual assault and sentenced to 20 months in prison in October of 2020.
Police say they are still investigating a possible religious or psychiatric motive for the May attack and note that Omar K. had been living in a refugee home for the last few months and also had issues with drugs.
The attack in Hamburg is just the latest involving an attacker yelling “Allahu Akbar” — Arabic for “[My] God is Greater” — over the last year in Western Europe.
In December of last year, a 20-year-old attacked police officers while armed with knives in the commune of Bollène shouting, “Death to the cops! Allahu Akbar!” but, unlike the attacker in Germany, he was brought into custody alive.
In July of 2020, another similar incident took place in the commune of Blanc-Mesnil in the Paris no-go suburbs of Seine-Saint-Denis.
Witnesses claim a man came at them with a knife and a rifle while yelling “Allahu Akbar” as they were leaving a party but another man driving a car hit the alleged attacker with his vehicle, stopping him.
The attack also comes nearly three years after a fatal stabbing attack in Hamburg in front of a supermarket that saw one person killed and several injured, with the knifeman also yelling the “Allahu Akbar” phrase.
Later identified as failed Palestinian asylum seeker Ahmad A., the attacker admitted he had been motivated by radical Islamic ideology to kill as many Christians as he could.
