Kosovo Albanians Charged with Joining the Islamic State

PRISTINA, Kosovo (AP) – Kosovo prosecutors on Friday filed terrorism charges against two ethnic Albanian women for allegedly joining the Islamic State group in Syria.

Prosecutors alleged in a statement that the two women, identified only as A.A. and L.I., went to Syria where they “willingly became part of the terrorist organization” and provided logistical support to the group’s male fighters.

They moved around Syria “depending on the change of territory of the Islamic State,” the statement added.

Following the defeat of the Islamic State group, the women were handed to Kurdish forces and deported to Kosovo on April 24, 2019, with the assistance of the American army, prosecutors said.

They face up to 15 years in prison if convicted of the charges.

Last year a group of 110 Kosovo citizens was repatriated from Syria and most were charged with terrorism offences. About 30 ethnic Albanians from Kosovo are still believed to be with terror groups in Syria and Iraq.
