Two men were arrested in Barcelona on Friday morning after a car was driven into terminal at the city’s airport, but police say have been able to rule out a terror motive.
A car was driven into the terminal of Barcelona airport through the revolving doors, coming to rest at the bottom of a set of escalators Friday morning and the two men were described as shouting “Islamist-type” slogans, reports wires service Reuters. There were no injuries at the scene, and the airport was near totally deserted at the time, like many international airports during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
Yet despite the now-familiar pattern of men shouting religious slogans driving vehicles at high speed into public areas, the police were able to quickly rule out a terrorism motive, saying in a statement: “The terrorist motive in this morning’s events at El Prat airport has been ruled out… it’s treated as common crime.”
Two Albanian men were arrested at the scene. No explosives or weapons were found.
