President Donald J Trump has said that the UK will have a “phenomenal trade deal” with the U.S. after the UK leaves the EU.

Speaking at a press conference with Prime Minister Theresa May at the Foreign and Commonwealth office in London on Tuesday, President Trump said that he and the British leader had discussed  “our thriving economic relationship” at an earlier meeting with leading business figures from the U.S. and UK.

“I can say probably [they were] the biggest business leaders in the world. Our nations have more than one trillion dollars invested in each others’ economies. The UK is America’s largest foreign investor and our largest European export market — that’s a lot of importance,” he added.

Addressing Brexit, the President said: “As the UK makes preparations to exit the EU, the U.S. is committed to a phenomenal trade deal between the U.S. and the UK. There is tremendous potential in that trade deal — I say probably two and even three times what we’re doing right now. Tremendous potential.”

Prior to President Trump’s speech, Mrs May had praised their two countries’ “transatlantic alliance” and remarked that their “economies are ever more tightly bound together”.

“Mr President, you and I agreed that we should aim for an ambitious Free Trade Agreement when the UK leaves the EU and from our positive discussions today, I know that we both remain committed to this,” Mrs May said.

“I’m also sure that our economic relationship will only grow broader and deeper, building on the conversation we had and ideas we heard from UK and U.S. businesses when he met earlier today,” she added.

The comments from the President came after he had said on Monday night that “[a] big Trade Deal is possible once [the] UK gets rid of the shackles”.

During Tuesday’s morning meeting with business leaders, President Trump discussed a future trade deal with the prime minister and others, emphasising that Brexit was “a great opportunity” to enhance the two countries’ trading relation.

“I think we’re going to have a very substantial trade deal,” the President said, before pledging: “We’re going to get it done.”
