Shaid Hanif faces jail after being found guilty of raping a woman he found intoxicated, covered in blood, and with cracked teeth and suffering a broken jaw after a night out in Bradford, England.
Bradford Crown Court heard the 40-year-old “used the woman, who was a total stranger, for his own gratification”, after coming across her by chance outside a Jurys Inn hotel, according to local media.
He found his victim staggering along the street alone in the early hours of the morning with her shirt covered in blood, after she had been out with friends at a nightclub in the racially-divided Yorkshire city, jurors heard.
Prosecutor Matthew Bean said the 22-year-old woman was seriously injured with a broken jaw, cracked teeth, a fractured finger, and was covered in grazing and bruising when she was encountered by Hanif, who called a taxi and took her to his home and raped her.
The court heard the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, woke up in the defendant’s single bed with no idea how she sustained her injuries, for which she later required stitches to her lip, and no memory of events beyond 2.30 a.m., when she had felt very drunk.
Hanif was convicted on Thursday of raping the woman at his home in February 2016, said the Daily Mail, reporting the defendant was remanded back into prison until his sentencing at Leeds Crown Court next month.
The Bradford resident originally stood trial for the attack in May last year, but the trial was halted while he was “treated in hospital for bruising” and “prescribed painkillers” after he was attacked by a man in the courtroom, according to local media.
Though the prosecution argued against an adjournment, the jury was discharged and the trial abandoned at the request of the defendant’s legal team, who argued that Hanif — who claimed his victim had “insisted” on going to bed with him and having sex — was “too shaken and shocked” to concentrate on the legal proceedings.
