Just four Labour Members of Parliament voted in favour of the Brexit withdrawal bill which passed the House of Commons in the UK Parliament on Wednesday evening.

The bill — which passed by a majority of 27 — was supported by Conservative Party and Democratic and Unionist Party (DUP) members.

Most of the parliamentary Labour Party, alongside Caroline Lucas (Green), the Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru, and the Scottish National Party (SNP) opposed the legislation which would repeal the 1972 European Communities Act. The bill now goes to the House of Lords.

The bill was debated for around 80 hours in total, and effectively makes the British Parliament sovereign again. Two hundred and forty-three Labour Party MPs decided to vote against the will of the British public, and against the sovereignty of Parliament in opposing the measure.

A full list of the MPs and how they voted can be seen here.

Eurosceptic Labour MPs Frank Field, Kate Hoey, John Mann, and Graham Stringer broke with their party to vote in favour, alongside the Conservative Party and the DUP.

Establishment Remain campaigners in the House of Lords are expected to give the bill a rocky ride through Britain’s upper house.

The bill in the Commons saw over 500 amendments tabled.

The Conservative Party began campaigning on the back of the vote immediately, launching a website wherein the public could write to the Labour Party to express their dismay at the Labour leadership.

The letter reads:

Dear Jeremy [Corbyn]

I was disappointed to hear that Labour voted to block the passage of the EU Withdrawal Bill in Parliament on Wednesday 17th January.

As you will be aware, the EU Withdrawal Bill is essential to ensuring the smoothest possible Brexit. By voting against it – without suggesting any alternative solution – Labour have confirmed they have no plan for Brexit.

Once again, Labour have put playing politics above the national interest. As my constituency, and the country at large, voted to leave the EU, I wanted to hear why your party has voted to ignore the referendum result.
