The best thing about Brexit will be the fact Nigel Farage will never speak in the European Parliament again, a Spanish MEP blasted in the chamber.
Esteban González Pons was lashing out at the former UKIP leader for his support of a democratic vote Catalonia, calling the vote a “fake referendum” and labelling Mr. Farage “far right”.
The MEP is a member of Spain’s People’s Party (Partido Popular), a right-leaning political party which grew out of a party founded by a minister in the fascist regime of dictator Francisco Franco.
The Spaniard slammed Mr. Farage for having “nothing to say” on Brexit after the Brexiteer chose to question Spain and the European Union (EU) for their reaction to the violent repression of the Catalonian vote.
Mr. Farage had said: “The EU’s response to this anti-democratic act has been telling. The EU Commission simply repeated the Spanish line that the referendum was illegal.
“It didn’t even condemn the shocking violence which was beamed around the world on TV news programmes.”
Mr. González Pons hit back: “My country can’t accept lessons on democracy from someone who I don’t consider to be a democrat. I have proof that he isn’t a democrat is that he won’t even stay to listen to my response.
“Thanks to Mr. Farage I feel happy about Brexit. Because thanks to Brexit, the far-right will leave this chamber. The only good thing about Brexit is that we’ll never have to listen to Mr. Farage again.”
“You had a chance to talk about Great Britain and Brexit and you missed it. You’d rather talk about Spain than about Great Britain. Because apart from screaming you have nothing to say about your country,” González Pons added.
“And I’ll tell you, speaking about Great Britain, that my parliamentary group is worried.
“Like Mr. Verhofstadt [the European Parliament’s chief Brexit negotiator] about Northern Ireland, I am very worried about Northern Ireland because it’s a unique problem that requires a unique solution. And [it] will demand the best of us.”
The Spaniard addressed the parliament, saying: “Ladies and gentlemen, contrary to what Mr. Farage and Catalonia separatists have said, Spain is a consolidated democracy. A loyal partner and good friend of the entire EU that needs everyone’s help.
“And the only ones it doesn’t need because they don’t provide us with anything, is the far-right, however much they’d like to join the party.”
