Tipped U.S. Envoy to EU: Trump Will Say ‘No’ to ‘Failed’ ‘Anti-American’ Bloc

The man tipped as the next U.S. ambassador to the European Union (EU) has slammed the “undemocratic” and “anti-American” bloc, indicating the Trump administration will “encourage a reversal of the … drive to a socialist, protectionist, United States of Europe”.

In a furiously Eurosceptic article, Dr. Ted Malloch argued the U.S. could no longer support a federalist EU when putting “America, first”, as EU trade, foreign, and defence policies increasingly work against the interests of the U.S.

“Of course the Transatlantic Alliance must continue. Good European-American relations are absolutely essential. But European integration is not at all in America’s interest”, he wrote in The Parliament Magazine.

EU leaders have repeatedly described President Donald J. Trump as a “threat” to the bloc in recent weeks, alongside the rise of anti-elitist, nationalistic sentiment across the continent.

The European Parliament’s chief Brexit negotiator, Guy Verhofstadt, recently accused Eurosceptics of destroying Winston Churchill’s legacy this week. However, Dr. Malloch hit back.

“The failure of the European integration project should by now be self-apparent to everyone,” he wrote. “This is simply not something Churchill or Roosevelt would countenance. The European Union has become undemocratic and bloated by both bureaucracy and rampant anti-Americanism.”

“It may be time to re-evaluate key US assumptions about Europe,” he added. “We do know that the US and the UK are different from Europe: we want democracy and accountability, while the EU is intrinsically undemocratic and unaccountable.”

He suggested the EU was “ungrateful” towards the U.S. He said the bloc displayed a “resentment of American power” not “confined to leftists ‘usual suspects’” but which “influences all of culture and policy-making in the EU”.

Specifically, he attacked the EU’s “protectionism”, particularly the Common Agricultural Policy, and claimed trade barriers erected by the EU harmed U.S. interests.

In terms of defence policy, he said, “Europe has been turning its back on the US and on NATO” by persuing “a separate defense to rival NATO and the US”. On foreign policy, he wrote:

“Furthermore, the EU increasingly openly works against US interests abroad – in the Middle East, Israel, Iran, on energy, Cuba, at the UN and the list goes on and on. And America with a blind eye just looks the other way. No longer. President Trump is on watch – and looking.”

Dr. Malloch praised Brexit as a “blessing to the world”. He said America should begin to engage bilaterally with European states, encouraging a revival of national democracy and even the “disunion” of the EU.

“The US should therefore definitively encourage more bilateral trade with Europe but make firm its opposition to a federal Europe by saying a definite No to a single Euro government,” he wrote.

Adding: “Put the EU to a referendum vote in every member country. It is time for greater scepticism and realism about the European Union and its not so hidden agenda and ‘ever closer union’.”
