The Deputy Assistant to U.S. President Donald J. Trump has expressed “disappointment” over House of Commons Speaker John Bercow’s decision to stop the President addressing Parliament.
Dr Sebastian Gorka told Breitbart News Daily the Speaker’s comments were “incredibly partisan”, adding that he could not recall a previous Speaker ever making such a statement.
Mr Bercow told the House of Commons Monday that he would not invite the U.S. President to speak to Parliament, saying: “Before the imposition of the migrant ban I would myself have been strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall, after the imposition… I am even more strongly opposed.”
He added: “I feel very strongly that our opposition to racism and to sexism and our support for equality before the law and an independent judiciary are hugely important considerations in the House of Commons.”
His comments were condemned by Conservatives, with one Iraqi-born MP saying he should “think about his position”.
Now Dr Gorka, a special advisor to the U.S. President, has weighed in.
When asked for his reaction, Dr Gorka said: “Disappointment. As somebody who – I’m a proud American, now – but as somebody who grew up in the UK, I can’t recall a Speaker making such an incredibly partisan comment about a duly democratically elected chief executive of one of the most important, if not the most important, allies to the United Kingdom.
“Theresa May had an amazing visit here with President Trump so I expect things here to be executed as planned.”
Dr Gorka previously appeared on BBC Newsnight, where he slapped down the show for suggestion the President’s travel ban was “dictatorial”.
“Anybody who uses that kind of language on a duly elected democratically chosen representative and head of government really should have their credentials examined very closely,” he said.
