Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside 10 Downing Street Tuesday night calling for a ceasefire in the embattled Syrian city of Aleppo.

Organised by activists under the #youth4aleppo hashtag, the demonstration came as Syrian government troops close in on rebels and stand on the verge of retaking the whole city.

As MPs held an emergency debate on Syria in the House of Commons, protesters waved banners demanding humanitarian corridors in Aleppo, likening Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Bashar Assad to Hitler, and comparing the situation to the Holocaust.

Notably absent from the protest were groups such as ‘Stop the War’ and similar far-left groups who have attended demonstrations against American and British involvement in foreign wars.

The protest was one of several across the world against Russian and Syrian government action in Aleppo.

Thousands also gathered outside the Russian consulate in Istanbul to call for a halt to the bombing of the city, as the UN described the situation as a “complete meltdown of humanity”.

The Facebook event for the London protest said: “The situation in Syria has become critical.

“This is an emergency protest in Solidarity with Aleppo and calling for an immediate ceasefire and the delivery of humanitarian aid by international organisations.”
