A Danish police officer has been described as not being in critical condition today after what his force have called a “madman” shot him in the face on Tuesday morning in Albertslund, Denmark.
The attack took place at approximately 0820 CET outside the Albertslund police headquarters, as the injured officer was arriving for work. A 26-year-old Danish individual has been arrested on suspicion of performing the attack after spending 40 minutes on the run.
A press release from the force states: “[The suspect] is known to police and will be charged with attempted murder tomorrow at Glostrup Court. Everything indicates that the perpetrator acted alone and that he was a madman.”
Although the police statement suggested madness may be a contributing cause to the attack, a force spokesman at a press conference today could not confirm whether the suspect was actually mentally ill.
Danish newspaper the Berlingske reports the injured officer, who is a dog handler for the force, is in a serious condition but is out of “immediate danger”.
Extra security was deployed to Danish police stations this morning immediately after the attack but that has now been relaxed.
Denmark’s BT reports the comments of Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, who said: “I am deeply dismayed that a policeman has been shot at police headquarters in Albertslund. That a policeman could be shot on his way to work is in every way horrible to consider. Those men and women who go to work every day to protect us should not live in fear.”
