The Cardinal Of Cologne Rainer Woelki has declared that Germany must have a new migrant policy and that policy should include allowing illegal migrants to bypass the law when entering Europe.
Cardinal Woelki is known for his exceptionally pro-migrant stance in the German city of Cologne. The Cardinal has been an advocate of mass migration of people from North Africa and the Middle East and has now claimed that the current migration system isn’t working. He believes that the best way to prevent deaths in the Mediterranean, which he calls “the sea of the dead,” is to allow the safe passage of illegal migrant boats into Europe reports Cologne paper Kölner-Stadt Anzeiger.
The Cardinal has, over the past year stirred controversy over comments and actions he has made on the subject of the migrant crisis. During the Corpus Christi feast earlier this year Cardinal Woelki conducted the mass for the feast inside of a migrant boat at the Cologne cathedral, using it as an altar.
“Whoever lets people drown lets God drown,” he said during the mass and added, “to see those in need and help them is the task the Lord has given to us as Christians.”
Since making the speech in May many more migrants have drowned trying to cross the sea to reach the shores of Europe. the solution, according to Woelki is to allow more migrants to come in legally, but his views are not universally shared within the Church.
Fellow Cardinal Christoph Schönborn has a much more conservative stance on the migrant crisis, saying that many Muslims who reach Europe actively wish to conquer the continent. “God have mercy on Europe and on thy people, who are in danger of forfeiting our Christian heritage,” the Cardinal prayed at a mass in Vienna’s iconic St. Stephan’s cathedral.
Cardinal Schönborn’s attitudes toward the migrant crisis are more reflected in the platform of the anti-mass migration Alternative for Germany (AfD), a party that Cardinal Woelki has spoken out against in the past. Criticizing the AfD demands for the halting of the building of Islamic minarets Woelki said, “whoever says ‘yes’ to church towers must also say ‘yes’ to minarets.”
A new migrant accommodation was also opened by the Cardinal in Cologne as he hoped that the project would combat the “right-wing populism” he described as threatening the social peace. He also mentioned that the election of U.S. president-elect Donald J. Trump illustrated that nationalism was on the rise.
Many of the places in the home are to be earmarked specifically for Christians. Reports over the past year have shown that Christians are often the subjects of violence and threats from Muslims in government run asylum homes.
