Two Polish migrants have been jailed for a “racially motivated attack” after throwing rashers of bacon inside a London mosque.
Police told reporters at Blackfriars Crown Court that the men had shown “disregard for… faith” during the “offensive” incident at the Al-Rahman Mosque in Crowndale Road, Camden, on Sunday the 2nd of October.
Pior Czak-Zukowski and Mateusz Pawlikowski, Polish nationals, were both given eight-month sentences for interrupting worshippers at evening prayer, the Borehamwood Times reports.
Mr. Pawlikowski, 22, of Muswell Hill, is said to have sworn at a Muslim man and threw a piece of bacon in his direction, before tossing further rashers onto the floor of the prayer room.
Police were swiftly called to the scene, where they tracked down the attackers nearby, finding empty bacon packets in their possession.
Detective Constable Tracey McMath said: “The defendants showed a complete disregard for the faith and belief of others in this callous and highly offensive incident.
“I hope their convictions highlight that we will not tolerate hate crime in any of its forms.
“I know this incident had a significant impact on the community and commend the victims for speaking up.
“Hate crime is often a hidden crime and it is essential we stand together to investigate all such allegations, support victims and bring perpetrators to justice.”
The men pleaded guilty at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday the 4th of October, before being remanded in custody and were sentenced on Tuesday the 1st of November to eight months’ imprisonment.
Pork and pig products and considered haram (forbidden) in Islam, and British police have persistently criminalised anyone taunting mosques or Muslims with them.
Police arrested two men on suspicion of “inciting racial hatred” for a pork-related incident at the same mosque in Camden earlier this year.
And at the beginning of the year, Police hunted the perpetrators of a similar ‘hate crime’ when two men and a woman threw bacon sandwiches at a large mosque in Bristol.
Many restaurants and schools in the UK no longer serve pork in accordance with Islamic law. However, in Germany, members of the government have called for it to be mandatory in government-controlled canteens to aid integration.
